those luscious 2024’s
When I reflect on my initial thoughts on the 2023’s, I relied on adjectives like “structured,” “tight,” “austere,” and “cellar-worthy.” In contrast, these 2024’s are luscious, gracious, rich, and generous right out of the gate. The 2024 growing season was more “typical” for Sonoma County: an earlier bud break, more sunshine, more warmth, with a traditional ripening timeline. I’m really excited for the 2024’s, and I was secretly hoping I’d have some early reviews to share in advance of the release. And I do!
Look mom! All A’s.
humble brag
2024 Sangiacomo Roberts Road: 91 “Understated layers of cranberry, rhubarb, chalk and blood orange…very pretty”
2024 Ferrington Vineyard: 94 “This is a standout in Bruliam's range of 2024s.”
BAM! Vinous reviewer Billy Norris is a kind heart and a champion for small wineries. He reviewed some 700+ wines during his recent tasting extravaganza, and I imagine additional Bruliam scores will trickle out in the months ahead. But I’m grateful for this lovely boost pre-release.
when the weather is frightful (& the world feels uncertain)
Rose is easy. She’s pink. Her wax crown is sparkly. She’s glitter, shiny, happy, bright, and [grownup] pinkalicious. She’s wonderfully aromatic and addictively yummy. Maybe you can even convince your favorite age 21+ Gen Z’er to try a sip instead of a syrupy RTD canned cocktail or High Noon. Or hoard the rose for yourself. That’s fine, too. It sells out fast, so think ahead to your Thanksgiving table now.
vinous regional report: sonoma
“January is always such an exciting time in Sonoma, heavy rains and flooding excepted. The promise of the new year lies ahead. Many estates are releasing their latest wines. This year’s new releases are mostly from 2024 and 2023, two strong back-to-back vintages that provide fascinating contrasts, as the growing seasons were diametrically opposite. The best wines from both vintages are superb.” (reproduced from Vinous)
have wine; will customize
Those “austere” 2023’s are slowly unfurling their cramped knees and elbows, softening around the edges. I opened a 2023 Soberanes yesterday, and she was singing. The 2023 zinfandel is showing beautifully. And the 2023 Heintz chardonnay is magic. (Thank you to everyone who takes time to send kind emails and gorgeous bottle shots sharing how much they are LOVING this wine!). If you’re already nostalgic for the ‘23’s, let me know. We can customize your order to include your favorites.
