Raven Education in Arts Program

Run by Matt and Shelly Proschold, the Raven Education in Arts Program (REAP) provides unique theatre and literacy opportunities for school-aged children in Healdsburg and the surrounding communities. The Program underwrites tickets for the local schools to attend these unique youth theatre productions and ensures that all Program attendees receive a copy of the book on which the play is based. Collateral teaching material is also provided so that teachers can reinforce the themes of the plays and literacy in general once back in the classroom. Visit: Raven Theatre – REAP

Healdsburg Jazz Festival Education Program

The Education Program of the annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival provides a series of musical workshops to supplement the underfunded arts programs in the Healdsburg public school system. Gregory Millard Foundation

Gregory “Shorty” Millard was a local La Jollan and member of the famed 82nd Airborne Army division. He was killed in 2007 while serving in Iraq. Rock The Classroom

Rock The Classroom restores music education in underserved public elementary schools in the Los Angeles area. Professional musicians go into the schools and use music and songwriting to complement and enhance the required literacy curriculum. Development Politics Fellowship

The foundation established a fellowship at U.C. Berkeley’s Travers Department of Politcal Science that funds graduate studies in socio-politial issues facing the developing world. Berkeley graduate students are actively involved with the U.N. and other NGO missions to Africa and Asia. Children’s Museum San Diego

Wounded Warrior Project

Wounded Warrior Project was started by a wounded vet to help other wounded vets. They teach amputees to ski, play golf, or compete in road races. Rady Children’s Hospital Auxillary

Autism Speaks

Autism Speaks has quickly become one of the largest foundations in the world dedicated to autism. The organization has a dual focus on funding research and increasing disease awareness. Salute Military Golf Association

We learned about the Salute Military Golf Association through a CNN story you can view here. The SMGA provides rehabilitative golf experiences for combat-wounded veterans. They provide clubs, lessons, and playing opportunities. Personally, I hate golf. But, as you can see in the CNN story, their program is helping our wounded heros get active and get on with their lives. Visit: Salute Military Golf Association.
